Back in 1993, at the age of 16, I flirted with death. I was diagnosed with gut TB (known as Tuberculosis). My weight plummeted to a mere 31kg. After a year of medications followed by regular check ups, I recovered.
Perhaps surviving TB made me bolder, I went back to smoking shortly. And the stresses at work didn't help. During my 14 years in smoking heaven, I did try to quit umpteen times but the longest period was a mere 30 days.
The turning point came during my first reservist training. While rushing at the stairs, I found myself panting very hard and grasping for air. My chest was tight and I felt breathless. I FELT LIKE DYING! That was the last straw. I knew I had to do something. I decided then...to quit smoking for good. It was not an easy decision to make and the after effects made it even harder. Cold turkey, irritability and mood swings are all common withdrawal symptoms I had to cope with
I rewarded myself by putting aside $10 every 2 days (that's the frequency that I will buy a pack of cigarettes) and come month-end, I was grateful and thankful that I had persevered. Looking at the savings, I was more motivated to continue to stay smoke-free. I became financially and physically healthier. I felt fitter and my appetite grew. I went for my evening swim more frequently and regularly. And in 2008, I fulfilled my dream ~ to complete a Triathlon.
Quitting smoking is like doing a triathlon. It takes a lot of mind power and determination. With strong mental power, you will definitely cross the finishing line (quit smoking). Of course, friends around you play an important role as well. I thank God for the good friends that came along the way. It was them that I did not go back to smoking and with the same support, I was able to enjoy life better.
